You chance to visit one of the top Texas golf destinations: Horseshoe Bay Resort

The latest GolfN sweepstakes is going to one of my favorite Texas golf escapes, Horseshoe Bay Resort.

I've always felt Horseshoe Bay doesn't get the national attention it deserves, likely because the Texas golf market skews more regional than national, and because the courses have been around for a few decades while national panels tend to prefer the shiny new toys.

That's set to change when Golf Channel's rebirth of the Big Break (Big Break x Good Good presented by Golf Galaxy) airs August 25, with the whole 24th season taking place at Horseshoe Bay.

But the Texas golfers in the know love Horseshoe Bay and keep coming back. The resort has seen more than $100 million in upgrades in recent years, and its residential communities have thrived thanks in part to their prime location on the shores of Lake LBJ, one of seven lakes that make up the Lower Colorado River.

Simply put, the combination of championship golf, resort amenities, and a lakefront setting gives Horseshoe Bay a total package in Texas that even the Omnis and Hyatts of the state should envy.

Three Robert Trent Jones Sr. Courses

Horseshoe Bay is one of Texas' top golf escapes. Located an hour west of Austin in the Texas Hill Country on the shores of Lake LBJ, the resort features three Robert Trent Jones Sr. designs: Ram Rock, Slick Rock, and Apple Rock.

All three courses are outstanding, and the original RTJ designs have all been recently renovated and updated.

I prefer Apple Rock most, thanks to its playability and the extremely fun, scenic stretch from Nos. 10–12.

Ram Rock has a reputation as one of the toughest courses in Texas, full of elevated greens and challenging doglegs.

Then there's the Slick Rock course: scenic, the most player-friendly of the three, and of course home to the $1 million waterfall hole on the back nine, which is a lot of fun to bang a drive over. It's also a short, potentially drivable par 4 that will get a lot of TV time during Big Break.

Here’s another new perk at the resort: guests will have an opportunity to break the Big Break glass for themselves and attempt to scale the “Flop Wall.”

Beyond the Fairways

As much as I like the courses, it's the off-course vibe at Horseshoe Bay that's the real difference-maker among the best Texas golf getaways.

It has, bar none, the coolest hot tub I've ever waded in.

The lakefront pool is a vibe, and even features a little sandy area along the lake for the little ones.

Cap Rock, the clubhouse that serves Ram Rock and Apple Rock, was rebuilt and officially reopened recently as well. It's more club-style and quiet than the main pool.

After dark, check out the Whitewater Putting Course, one of the best natural-grass putting courses around.

All this makes Horseshoe Bay one of the most complete resorts in the South, for golf and everything after it. I try to get there every year, and maybe I'll see you there if you win this month's GolfN sweepstakes.
