What does green mean in golf?

Greens are the most meticulously maintained areas on a golf course, mowed to heights as low as 0.100 inches on tournament courses. Green speed is measured by the Stimpmeter — faster greens require more delicate touch and better read of break. Greens vary in size (averaging about 5,000 square feet), shape, and undulation. Green complexes often feature bunkers, slopes, and false fronts that make approach shot placement critical to scoring.
