Greens in Regulation

A statistic measuring how often a golfer reaches the putting surface in the expected number of strokes (par minus 2).

What does greens in regulation mean in golf?

Reaching a green in regulation (GIR) means arriving on the putting surface with at least two putts remaining to make par — one shot on a par-3, two on a par-4, three on a par-5. GIR is one of the strongest correlates with scoring average and is widely considered the most important ball-striking stat. PGA Tour players average around 65% GIR, while a 15-handicap golfer typically hits about 25-30% of greens in regulation.
