A score of one stroke over par on a single hole.
A bogey means completing a hole in one more stroke than its par rating. For most recreational golfers, bogey golf (averaging one over par per hole) represents solid play and roughly corresponds to an 18 handicap. The term has British origins, derived from the 'Bogey Man' — a fictitious standard player against whom golfers competed before the modern par system was adopted. Double bogey (two over) and triple bogey (three over) describe progressively worse outcomes.
