Scoring

Par

The predetermined number of strokes an expert golfer is expected to need to complete a hole or a round.

What does par mean in golf?

Par is the universal benchmark in golf. Individual holes are rated as par-3 (up to 250 yards), par-4 (251-470 yards), or par-5 (471+ yards), though these ranges are guidelines and course architects have flexibility. Par for a standard 18-hole course is typically 70-72. The par calculation assumes reaching the green in 'regulation' (par minus 2) and taking two putts. Scoring is described relative to par — 'even par,' '3 under par,' '2 over par,' and so on.
