Divot

A piece of turf displaced by the clubhead during a golf shot, or the resulting hole in the ground.

What does divot mean in golf?

Divots are a natural result of proper iron play — the club should strike the ball first, then the turf. The divot pattern reveals information about swing path and angle of attack. Divots that point left of target (for right-handed golfers) indicate an out-to-in swing path. Good golf etiquette requires replacing divots or filling them with the sand-seed mixture provided on many courses.
