Scoring

Cut

In tournament play, the score threshold that determines which players advance to the final rounds; also describes a shot that curves gently left to right for right-handed golfers.

What does cut mean in golf?

In professional tournaments, the cut typically occurs after 36 holes and eliminates roughly half the field. Players must score below the cut line to continue competing in the weekend rounds. Missing the cut means no prize money and early departure. As a shot shape, a cut is a controlled left-to-right ball flight (for right-handers) produced by an open clubface relative to the swing path. It is considered more reliable than a draw for many course management situations.
