Lag Putt

A long putt where the primary goal is getting the ball close to the hole rather than sinking it.

What does lag putt mean in golf?

Lag putting is a critical skill for avoiding three-putts, especially on large greens or from distances over 30 feet. The objective is distance control — leaving the ball within a 3-foot circle around the hole for a stress-free second putt. Speed is more important than line on lag putts because the ball will naturally take less break when rolling faster. Good lag putters save multiple strokes per round compared to players who leave long putts well short or blast them past.
