Three-Putt

Taking three putts to hole the ball once on the putting green, generally considered a wasted stroke.

What does three-putt mean in golf?

Three-putting is one of the fastest ways to inflate a golf score. A three-putt means at least one stroke was wasted on the green — a missed opportunity since par assumes only two putts per hole. PGA Tour players three-putt only about 2-3% of the time, while amateur golfers may three-putt 10-20% of greens. Reducing three-putts is primarily about improving lag putting (distance control on long putts) rather than hole-out putting.
