A player's gross score minus their course handicap strokes, used to level competition between players of different abilities.
Net scoring is what makes handicap golf possible. If a player shoots 92 and has a course handicap of 18, their net score is 74. In competitions, net scores allow higher-handicap players to compete against lower-handicap players on equal terms. Strokes are distributed across holes based on the stroke index — the most difficult holes are where higher-handicap players receive their extra strokes first.
