A small peg used to elevate the ball for the first shot on each hole; also refers to the designated area (tee box) from which play begins.
The tee is the only time in golf when a player is guaranteed a perfect lie — the ball sits at the exact height of their choosing. Wooden and plastic tees are most common, with longer tees used for drivers and shorter tees for irons and hybrids. The teeing area (or tee box) is defined by markers that indicate where players may place their ball. Different colored tee markers indicate different course lengths for players of varying abilities.
