Double Eagle

The North American term for an albatross — a score of three strokes under par on a single hole.

What does double eagle mean in golf?

Double eagle is the preferred terminology in American golf for what is internationally called an albatross. It most commonly occurs as a 2 on a par-5, which requires holing a long approach shot or reaching a par-5 green with a second shot and sinking it. Gene Sarazen's 'shot heard round the world' at the 1935 Masters — a 4-wood holed from 235 yards on the 15th hole — is the most famous double eagle in golf history.
